Going to Chicago
We go to Chicago this weekend.
I lived in Chicago from 1988-2000. I attended the Lyric Opera of Chicago and heard some splendid productions over those years. When I moved to Michigan in 2000 to start a life with Someone, we kept up the subscription. Someone was new to the opera world. I appreciate his patience in trying them. Most of the time he seems to enjoy them as much as I. Only bone of contention is “Peter Grimes”. I can never hear it enough; Someone would sooner eat rats.
Anyway, we both bemoaned ‘not going anymore’ when we moved to Arizona. However some clever young opera queen at the subscriber office kept calling; we finally got the ‘out of town’ series.
So twice a year we fly in for two operas each. We also see friends and eat at favorite places. As is our wont, we stay with “Scott and Bob” – although lately they are out of town more often than not when we drop in. This defeats some of the goals for going to Chicago but we are grateful for the allowance of their fabulous high rise.
This weekend we hear 2 works; a "Iphigenie en Tauride" by Gluck, and “Turandot’ by Puccini. The first is new opera for me; the later I have not heard in a long while. I am looking forward to them as Lyric usually does a good job. After some of the Arizona Opera productions they should sound fantastic.
While in town we will brunch Michael Guy of Temporary Troublespots and partner.
We will also have dinner with Douglas of Gossamer Tapestry and his partner – no doubt to talk about Costa Rica.
While in Chicago we will FINALLY see “Wicked”! We waited too long here in Arizona and the tickets were sold out. :-(
I don’t know about you, but I ‘pay’ for going away on a 3 day weekend. Lots of work to do prior to departure.
I hope you all are well. I try to visit 40 or so blogs on a regular basis - for all the news and recent goings-on!

Rats are quite tasty if seared properly to seal in the juices and dressed with a nice cheery-walnut sauce.
I meant CHERRY-walnut, sorry.
Ewe yuck!
Ooooo, that's so cool for you to be going away! I hope you have a safe flight and all. Take lots of pictures so when you get back you can post one of Douglas all plastered and doing the Hokey Pokey in a dress on the bar.
Don't be a Stranger!
Your going to love Wicked. I just saw it in NYC and it was great! Have fun and be safe.
Quite a diverse program. I love Turandot and Iphigenie I've only seen once and had some reservations. Terrible staging.
Have a great time in Chi Town and let me know what you think of Wicked.
did you visit the steamworks?
the best bathhouse in the country
I sang a few arias there...
;)
I am jealous of your theatre trips. It would be wonderful to travel to a city just to see theatre. I haven't done that since my first trip to NYC in 1983. Of course I was only 2 so it doesn't really count.
Have fun!?
Be safe!?
Enjoy the windy city and the operas/shows!
Have you been telling BID what I do when we're out together? Behave, or I'll break out the Spanish again.
I haven't been to Chicago in years! Hope you have a great time, and say hello to Michael for us.
Have a safe and wonderful trip!
It's been a little cold and rainey here lately, so pack accordingly...maybe the rain can stay away for ya for the weekend. The Chicago cast of "WICKED" are fantastic...and there isn't a bad seat in the Oriental, so Enjoy! And yes, "horsehoes" are still the sandwich of choice in Spfld, lol.
Have a great time in Chicago this weekend. I love Chicago, need to get back there for a visit.
Yay, Wicked, Yay! You're going to love it!! I'll be hitting the road for a drive to San Diego this weekend. Be safe :)
Have a good one !
Sounds fab! I have only spent 1 hour in a Chicago airport when my flight to Las Vegas was diverted (Dallas to Chicago then back to Vegas). I hear it is a wonderful city. Have a great time.
I lived in Chicago for 8 years myself, love the city (hate the weather, blech!) but it's the perfect time of the year to go. I won't be back until IML next memorial day.
Turandot is one of my favorites, and CLO is supposed to do an amazing job with it, I never did get to see it there, I want a full report when you get back!
Have a great time in Chicago!
I've been lucky enough to get to see "Iphigenie en Tauride" twice--once at the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown, NY and once here in Boston.
The Glimmerglass Festival production took the homoerotic relationship of Orestes and Pylades to its logical conclusion and had both men close to naked and locked in each other's arms most of the performance. It was almost overwhelming in its beauty.
Please report on both productions when you get back!
Have a great weekend in Chicago! I will not be posting a lot, so there will be one less to read...I'll be back in full force next Tuesday :) Have fun!
have a blast in chicago...that's another city I want to get back to and explore more. and with respect to WICKED...you will absolutely love it. Hopefully the Chicago casts' Wicked Witch is as good as the one in New York City. Miss Espinosa was phenominal.
