How Does That Make You Feel?

It's time for "How Does That Make You Feel?" Thursday!

The Aliens are back and they are upset.
They are very annoyed as while snooping around blog land for IKEA samples they discovered “Word Verification”. It often spells out the more popular names given to their female newborn. So they are working on sabotage. Don’t be surprised to see in the future that in order to leave comments at your favorite blog sites you have to type in the name of Project Runway contestants.

Speaking of Project Runway, it is on at our house 24/7. It is Someone’s favorite show. I don’t watch it myself but I overhear it in bits and pieces.
What strikes a nerve is the line up of contestants - melodramatic music playing - the pompous one announces ‘you’re in’ or ‘you’re out”. This reminds me all too much of high school gym baseball, when teams lined up and took turns in picking out the players.
You can see where this is going; I was always the last to be picked, and several times they would barter “well we took him last time, so you have to take him this time”. Once I was put on the ‘blue team’ only to have another member say in icy tones “we don’t want you on our team”.

You’re out.”

Someone assures me that this is not really the tone or case in Project Runway.

You’re Out” and “You’re in” on Project Runway - or in life:

How does that make you feel?

I disagree with Someone. It's more like the "high school" you're out, you're in than most of us would like to admit. And I can't help feeling that's the way most of the contestants feel when they leave.

As for me. I remember not being picked until last. It didn't feel good then, and I can't imagine that it would feel good last.

That being said...I Love Project Runway.

O HO! You are secretly trying to push all my buttons, aren't you!

Definitely life is like high school gym class. Perhaps that was its most important and painful lesson and value.

You know EXACTLY what it was like. When you have to stand there as the last one to be picked while the teams argue over you - not because they want you but because they don't want to be "stuck" with you again - it does your self esteem wonders! It's no fun being the "omega kit".

BTW, I never have watched Project Runway and I have no intention of voluntarily doing it.

I have never seen Project Runway, but I am familiar with being chosen last. Unfortunately, it has become a favorite topic of mine with my therapist.

That being said, I also think the our world that rewards kids for everything is wrong too. I hate to quote Dr. Laura, but whe did say something I agree with, "The world doesn't care about your self-esteem." We can't expect the world to bow to our every whim.

I would say this is where our churches are failing. We are wonderful creations of our creator. It doesn't matter if we play baseball well or can design clothes well. We are wonderful because we are made by God. If we don't get this through to our children, then they are left to think their worth comes from their shoes, their clothes, their iPod, or the number of people they have sex with.

I LOVE Project Runway...very bitchy! If I were told I was out, I'd say, "YOUR LOSS SUCKER" I'll start my own team. LOL

I remember gym class and the guys that were chosen last - I felt for them as they always looked sad about it. When it was my turn to be "Captain", I'd usually pick these guys - probably because I'm not EXTREMELY competitive when it comes to sports. I like sports, but I don't give a flip if I lose.

Has been a normal part of my life for as long as I can remember - no big deal anymore - I am used to it!

Oh, not the "little gay boy being chosen last for the baseball team" thing again! Yeah, I was, too. That'll probably make up some of the points that I lose from my gay card for not being interested in Project Runway. I saw it once (with Someone and Michael Guy) in Florida last year. Bleah.

In terms of being in or out I found that I was out as long as I was in, and now that I'm out, I'm much more likely to be in. Or something like that.

As an avid Project Runway watcher, you touched on the biggest pet peeve of that show, the "You're In" and "You're Out" phrases. You are right, it's like gym class all over again with all the contestants lined up getting picked. Somewhat condescending and humiliating.

But then again, look at "America's Next Top Model", basically the same thing. And "Survivor", too.

So I guess to up the dramatics in the show, what better way then to line them all up and replay most everybody's bad memories of gym class.

Just my $.02. :)

Thanks, aliens freak me out a little. Now I will think of them every time I comment somewhere. :(

Just so your all mad at me, I was never picked last and I hate reality game type shows.

Good Day!

I've never seen Project Runway, but thank you for crystallizing my gelling thoughts surrounding "reality" shows in general. Yes, as one of those fat little guys who was always picked last "damn, I'm stuck with HIM" you made me realize my loathing for the "reality" show harkens back to this you're out/you're in mentality.
One of the reasons why I love blogging: I can be unpopular in real life yet still have readers compliment me.

My alien-spawn name for this post, by the way, is: leirb
I KNOW that was second choice for Tom & Katie, right after suri...

The phrase pushes buttons. Especially when mouthed by a vapid twat whose claim to fame is being a clothes hanger.

I LOVE Project Runway. Don't hate me. I LOVE Heidi Klum. Don't hate me more. By admitting this on your blog, I'm probably "Out". :)

I think it's great on Project Runway because they know the game and some of them play it all too well.

As for Gym Class, I was sometimes chosen last and sometimes first depending on the sport, it was never a problem. Having never been argued over I'm out of the loop on this but imagine that would be a crushing blow.

I can not stand that show! I agree that it's just like P.E. in school, I was always that last one picked. I never was very good in sports and never really cared if I won or lost. I did enjoy the locker room....Aaahhhh! MEMORIES!

I was the last one chosen; the Special Ed kid with tape on his glasses was ahead of me; apparently he could run fast. I hope all those jock fuckers that made my life miserable have ballooned to 400lbs. But I'm not bitter. Just hateful in my loving fashion.

I avoided team sports for that very reason. Skiing and track were my sports. I still do not play team sports...mmmm

rather mixed feelings. I'm just coming back into the game in some ways, and I can come down with "audition" jitters quite easily... it's annoying...

Doesn't make me feel good, because I was always the kid they didn't want on the team in high school.

Truth to tell, despite the feeling of rejection which hurt a lot, I wasn't too unhappy. I felt totally out of place in athletics and was far more interested in the theaters, opera houses and concert halls of New York City than its baseball diamonds. School counselors told me I'd never amount to anything (it was a Catholic school--they had no use for the arts) but last year they invited me back to speak at a Career Day for juniors and seniors to describe my life as a successful working theatrical designer. It just felt great.

I love the artistry in Project Runway, it's a really great show. But I am sick and tired of Mz. Klum in her "Auf'd" speeches... I lose one more marble everytime she says it!

Most of life is not "in or out" but some jobs (actors and singers for instance) are very much the 'in' or 'out' style echoed by project runway, so while it's frustrating, it's also a greater adventure, if you can handle the stress.

Why does the gym story resonate all to well, as if it happened just yesterday. that was a constant for me up until I got inot high school. Then I was able to control the matter by simply not putting myself in those situations. I even heard my own cousin saying it about me one summer when we were selecting teams amongst the cousins for a basketball scrimmage. "YOu don't want to pick him...he's no good. I think that hurt the most because it came from a blood relative. But as most everything, I have placed that behind me.
