New Year's Eve

“It’s New Year’s Eve and hopes are high”

My hopes are not that high. We will be home tonight. Neither one of us wants to brave the Phoenix traffic. Arizona drivers are nasty but on NYE they must be even more hazardous.

So we are going to watch Sunset Boulevard and watch the ball drop in Times Square. This occurs at 10PM local time, so we can go to sleep afterwards if we want.

Such a decadent lifestyle we lead.

When we were children, we kids had a superstition that the last word of the old year should be “rabbit”. We got that off of an activity calendar. I only remember this as Brother #3 calls each year to ask if I am still doing that. Yes, I do.

Someone is from the South, and will prepare black eyed peas tomorrow. It is a new tradition for me. Bloggers from the South; do you do this as well?

Another ritual of Someone is to have all the Christmas decorations down by tonight. Can’t have them linger into the New Year it seems.

I purchased my new (handwritten) journal; a pale green journal with a dragonfly on the cover.

I make a dozen or more New Year’s resolutions as I find so much in me that I want to improve. Someone finds this strange that I make so many. Many of these are goals rather than personal growth/habit clean ups.
Last years’ list did not do so well, so there are plenty of carry overs into 2007.

Well, I am off to the annual read of “The Little Match Girl”.

Peace and Health in 2007 to the forty to fifty bloggers I met this year.

Prosperity for all, if that is possible.

Happy New Year to you as well. May you and Someone have a wonderful evening as well as a wonderul 2007.

I'm from Kenucky and we don't do black-eyed peas at New Years. But we're all backwards so who knows.

Resolutions are great, just remember not to beat yourself up if they slowly slip away.

Where I'm from (yeah, I'm from FLA, but we're southern folk), it was bad luck if you didn't have black-eyed peas on New Year's Day. I'm in New England now, but I'll still have them... just in case. (Chris won't touch them, BTW.) Another thing my mom always says (and her mom said - and her mom, ad nauseum) is, whatever you do on New Year's Day, you'll do all year long. Old wive's tales, I'm sure, but I don't wanna mess with it. Happy New Year, by the way!

Peace, happiness and healt to you too SPO!?

I don't do resolutions. People are always full of hope on the New Day and then forget about them.

We're also staying in, Madonna concert on TV tonight(comercial free), Dick Clark, and a few year end specials.

Around here, 12 is 12. No going to bed before, you old timer you!? lol

Now I was always told that if the FIRST thing you say on the first day of each month is Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit - you have good luck all month...

And Steve is right - I was always told you got a dollar in the new year for every black eyed pea you ate - explains why I am so poor - I HATE the damn things!

Your evening sounds wonderful. Good food, good movie, and a good man to bring in the New Year with.

I love black eyed peas and rice made with coconut milk.

Happy New Year Spo,
It's going to be a good one for you.

I have a ritual that you say 'rabbit' at the beginning of each month. Same tradition as yours, only backwards. Happy New Year!

I'm in Florida, which probably isn't considered "the south," but we never did the black eyed peas thing, though I've heard of it.

Happy New Year to you and Someone!

I have never heard of the black eyed pea or the rabbit traditions before, but I always remember the Little Match Girl and her grandmother when I see a falling star.
Happy New Year to you and your mate!

I'm planning on ringing in the New Year by staying home as well. I'm going to listen to music and read a good book.

I rented Flight 93 from Netflix, but I'm not sure I want to spend NYE watching it. Seems like a depressing way to welcome the new year.

Best of all wishes for 2007.

Good friends of my family growing up were from Tennessee. They hels a New Year's Day party each year, and black eyed peas figured prominently. Sadly, he passed about a year and a half ago. Best to both of you in the new year. Just think, we'll be together in the tropics in just 5 weeks. We're spending New Year's Eve with John and Michaelwho say hi.

I've not heard of the black-eyed peas, but my mom would always have cole slaw on New Year's Day. She said it brought prosperity.

I do the black-eyed pea thing as well (born in Oklahoma, but I hate the damned things and let them rot before I get around to gagging them down. Explains a lot, eh?

Happy New Year, witha great, warm hug.

No NY resolutions here -- can't seem to keep them much past the first week or so -- so I gave them up. Hope your new journal becomes filled with profound thoughts and dreams. Happy New Year.

Sometimes feelings deceive. I rather thought your light shone brightly.
Black eyed peas for New Year's day, with collard greens and ham, is one of the few holiday traditions I keep.

I was born and raised in West Texas and we always had black eyed peas on NY Day. My dad is from Philly so he had never heard of the black eyed pea ritual until he met my mom. Mom always served them for good luck along with corn bread and a green veggie for prosperity.

Happy New Year!

Funny...we get the east coast feed of the network channels and usually watch the ball drop at 9:00 so we can be in bed by 10:30. Oh, we still go out some years...just not this one.

I also agree with Someone about the Christmas decorations. All are down by the 1st. Unfortunately my back is keeping the house lights up another week.
