Curious Things Around the House #6

This is a painting titled ‘Woman holding Flowers”
It was painted by a patient when I was just out of residency. She gave it as payment for her treatment. She had schizophrenia. She was trying very hard not only to keep the voice down in her head but to live as an artist. It was her passion, although at the time I knew her it was not her livelihood. She worked in a restaurant washing dishes.
If you look long enough you can see the outline of a person holding what looks like brown eyed Susans (Rudbekia). There are two small dots for eyes; the yellow streaks at the top are the hair.
Above and behind the eyes next to the bit of turquoise, is a plastic gem glued into the canvas. I believe it is where the woman’s soul is supposed to originate.

Someone does not like this painting, but I am rather fond of it.

I’ve often wondered what happened to her; where is she now and how is she doing. That is the trouble of ex patients. They don’t drop you notes 5-10 years later to tell you how they are, and I can not go looking for them. I only hope that what encounter I had with them made some sort of positive difference in their lives.
Her gift of art remains long after the others who merely paid their bill with money.

Former patients are like former parishoner -- often but a memory. Every once in a while, I get the opportunity to cross paths with someone from past parishes and to see that somewhere, somehow I helped to make a difference in their lives. I wish the same for you -- to hear from or cross paths with a former patient whose life you have enriched.

Too often, though, we end up simply moving on to new patients and parishoners and pray that the former ones continue to move forward.....

the joy of "helping" professions???

The painting is beautiful.

Thank you for accepting it as payment. I'm sure it helped her a great deal.

I know you've earned your wings!?

It was lovely of you to receive it. From what you say, it may have meant more than a mere monetary payment to her.
I have a painting I'm trying to move. Right now, the money would mean more to me. In some way, that feels oddly symmetrical to me.

the colors are muted, yet become the focus against a more somber base. It is curious how defined the flowers are and that there seems to be five to a flower. The grouping of flowers from a wide triangle that points to the gem, above which the colors of the flowers are again reflected... in her mind?

I love the painting and the story behind how you came to own it. I am sure you helped her a great deal, both by treating her and accepting it as payment.

It's quite a lovley painting. I like that she painted it for you as payment for treatment. That's so sweeet and even nicer of you accepting it.

Mike,

I guess it's part of our professional training not to be too bothered with what ultimatly becomes of the people we are supposed to have helped. But to spend months trying to help someone and then to send them on their way after their case as somehow been "resolved," without knowing how this "resolution" has actually worked out in the rest of their lives, is somthing I find difficult, even after decades of professional experience. But pursuing the matter would involve an invasion of the client's privacy.

Sometimes ex clients do write back to thank us, or let us know what they are doing. But generally, when I hear from ex clients, it's generally because they need additional help. At least they feel that we were effective enough to come back when they need us again.

I wonder if this was a painting she already finished or if it was painted expecially for you. She seems to have captured your love of gardening and possibly her/your discussions of her schizophrenia.

I find it beautiful and telling and would be proud to own it regardless of where she may be now.

The painting is beautiful. The story is even more so. I'm sure you had a huge impact on her life. Let's hope she's been able to live with the demons and enjoy her gift.
