The Things One Finds in Costa Rica
This year we forgo
So in 3 weeks we get on a plane and fly to San Jose, not
This will be a new experience for me. Being a biologist/botanist by training (and traveling companions being who they are) I bought a book to check out the flora and the fauna. Here are some fun facts;
850 species of birds, more than
It has 6 species of wild cats.
70 species of bats.
1.400 species of epiphytes. (epiphytes are orchids you sillies)
The geology has active volcanos. We will take a day trip to the most active one and go hiking.
We will also be on the look-out for howler monkeys, kinkajous, and whatever beasties are lurking in the jungles.

Awe, One of these days Spo, I want to get to Costa Rico too. Is Doug going?
Those beasts that run around with nets and migrated originally from MA are very interesting!
It's interesting that you chose the orchid picture that you did. It's a species that I have seen many times in CR, though not in the parts that we will be visiting. But it isn't an epiphite (which are plants that grow in trees). It's a shrub. I always find it cool to see people growing this shrub orchid in their front yards much as we grow rhododendrons here in the States.
that is one wild looking bat. I am envious of your grand adventure. Make sure you take lots of pictures to share with your winter-bound friends.
Of Course Mr. Smartypants has to correct my botany!
But then it is his area of expertise!
I am so jealous! Its -20 F outside, the forecast says more "ick" in our foreseeable future and you are heading off to Puerto Rico. Sucks to be me I guess (and not in a good way).
Have a wonderful time, take lots of pictures and post them soon. I'll have to live vicariously for awhile.
Laurie- the cold has frozen your vision - it is Costa Rica not Puerto Rico!
hohoho
You are a wealth of information Spo.
That is one mean looking bat.
Hopefully, you'll see a few species of "cabana boy" while you're there as well... ;P
Let's just hope those beasties don't go lurking around your cabana. Unless, of course, it's the homocabanicus, as tigeryogi pointed out.
So how many tarantula type spiders do they have?
Sorry...I had to do that.
You'll have a great time I'm sure...especially considering your traveling companions. Take lots of pictures, we'll all want to see a bit of Costa Rica through your eyes.
there are no tarantulas in costa rica, the government had them removed along with the Sandinistas many years ago.
Beasties in the jungle...I think I've played that game befor. ;-O
Number of tarantulas I've ever seen in Costa Rica: 0
Number of Sandinistas I've ever seen in Costa Rica: Not sure, but if I saw any, I hope they were hot.
I will think of you when I am outside making a snowman! Sounds like a great adventure with loads of fun as well!!!
I have brain freeze, what can I say? It was -7 at 2 pm today. Have fun wherever you're going. And if you see a cute, bi or straight cabana boy...send him my way ok? ;-)
Men with big nets can catch big things. Be on the lookout for them and have a great time.
Love Key West...haven't been to Costa Rica yet...have fun!
Costa Rica seems to have all sorts of wonderful things, including men with nets. Have a wonderful time!
Well, he's the catalyst to all this adventure and drama into jungles and volcanos rather than drag queens on Duvall.
Your humor never fails me.
*off the subject, my two year old was just shooed from the bathroom. He says, "Haf ta put on my make up." Should I be worried? *L*
I can't wait for your trip it must be so exciting!
I love seeing the wildlife in places I travel to. It sounds amazing. I remember going to a park in Aruba and seeing wild miniature goats and birds of every color.
Make sure to have fun!?
And bring us back a pic of every species!? lol
